Lucky Country was established in Sydney, Australia by Lenka Dransfield. Lenka had been in the food industry all her life. She started exporting Aussie licorice to the USA and eventually set up a factory in Lincolnton, North Carolina so she could ensure that the freshest licorice would be on the market.

Our famous licorice started with a lucky accident. During the process of making a batch of hard licorice, someone miscalculated and made a soft, smooth product. A winner was born! Now, almost 50 years later, it is still Australia’s largest selling licorice. American consumers seem to love “Aussie Licorice”. Aussie licorice sells much faster than “regular” American style licorice. The continued success of the Aussie style licorice is due to its unique softness. A soft bite which continues with a soft chewy product has allowed Lucky Country to rapidly grow to be a leader in its field.

Now you know why Australia is called “The Lucky Country,” because such “lucky” mistakes keep us Australians from taking ourselves too seriously and driving ourselves into extinction! Actually, the name “Lucky Country” is a nickname sometimes used to describe Australia, taken from the 1964 book of the same name by social critic Donald Horne.

We still make our licorice in the same traditional way, one batch at a time, with the finest ingredients anyone can buy. Most of our ingredients are natural and grow on farms so you should expect slight variations in color and flavor from batch to batch and year to year. Many people comment on how they enjoy Lucky Country licorice as a “guilt free treat” because it naturally contains virtually no fat.

At Lucky Country, we pride ourselves on our uncompromising attitude to quality. We also want to be known as the leader and innovator in the gourmet licorice category. Last year, Costco asked us to develop a Marionberry licorice. Marion berries are berries that grow in Marion Country, Oregon, and are only available for about 6 weeks a year. They are dark, very flavorful berries that are a mixture of blackberries, raspberries, ollalieberries and chehalem berries. Our Gourmet, Soft Licorice is available in original black, strawberry, green apple, black cherry and pineapple. Stayed tuned to our website for a complete listing of all of our products.

We ship our products to many different countries throughout the world including England, Canada, Germany, Poland, Taiwan, South Africa, and we even ship to Australia!

Even though our products are available in many stores across the USA, people sometimes write or call us to say that their local store does not stock our licorice and they really want to buy it. That’s why we started selling our licorice on this website.
